What is our identity?

What is home for us?

These are important questions we have to ask today.

 A “Stateless person” is what composer Kurt Weill called himself after the Nazi party took power in Germany. With the rise of war and nationalism in the world today, all boundaries between countries and people are shifting, and Ayuo, who grew up in New York City and has consciously incorporated issues of identity into his music from very early on, and others of us with diverse origins and backgrounds living in Japan, are asking “What is identity? What is home for us?“  The sounds, voices, songs, and rhythms of the music are proof of the “life” of those who are moving from the past into the future, and are alive with imagination and creativity.

◉ Ayuo is a Japanese-American who grew up in New York with an Iranian stepfather.

 He will perform a collection of songs based on themes about “People Without a Country“ with his group and guests.

Here are profiles of the performing musicians:

◉ Ayuo is a Japanese-American who grew up in New York with an Iranian stepfather.

 〜He will perform a collection of songs based on the themes about  “People Without a Country”.

✷Ayuo is a composer, lyricist, vocalist, guitarist, and bouzouki player. Born the eldest son of composer and pianist Yuji Takahashi. Raised in New York City, he was influenced by American experimental music, literature, and art of the late 1960s. His parents' families were divorced and married several times, and he was raised by parents who were Iranian-American, Irish-American, and British, among other diverse cultures and religious beliefs. This environment created Ayuo's cultural background. Influenced by European medieval music, Ayuo continues to play his own tuned guitar. Notable CDs include “Outside Society,” “ayuo.bandcamp.com,” and “Eurasian Journey.　

Junzo Tateiwa:

Studied drums with Minoru Sakata, darbuka with Susu Pampanin (S.F./USA) and Serdar BAGTIR (Istanbul/Turkey), and tabla baya with Seiki Yoshimi and Prafulla Athalye. He has studied Indian, Arabic, and Iranian classical music, rock, and jazz. He has performed not only in Japan but also in the U.S., Europe, U.K., Turkey, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Korea, and other countries.

Takako Minekawa :

Takako Minekawa's career began at the age of six when she played the child role of Orin (Shima Iwashita) in the movie “Hanaregoze Orin” known as  “Ballad of Orin“(directed by Masahiro Shinoda). She has collaborated with a wide variety of artists including Oyamada Keigo and Ryuichi Sakamoto and has recently been performing improvised music in the US, China as well as in Japan

◉Yiddish Songs - The Songs of the Exiles without a Homeland

〜The spiritual home of the homelandless wanderers

 Miwazow Kogure is a Chiing-Dong drummer, singer, and koto player who began playing the koto since the age of 3. She is one of the pioneers of the new Ching-Dong genre. As a singer, she sings Yiddish songs, Brecht songs, various multilingual songs, and folk songs in Japan and abroad, and in “Threepenny Opera,” she sings all the songs by herself, playing five different roles of both men and women.

Erika Ueda has often traveled to “Kurdistan” to sing folk songs collected from her daily life in the region. She is a collaborator in writing the Kurdish part of the “Encyclopedia of Official Languages of the World”. In 2023 and 2024, she invited Serdar Canan, a Kurdish musician and researcher, and organized and performed with him in concert tours, musical theater, and workshops.

◉Koreans residents in Japan (Zainichi Koreans)　

〜Ensemble of E. Guitar, Korean traditional percussion and Sax

FangTaeil is a third-generation Zainichi Korean from Tokyo, Japan. 19 years old, He joined Shibusa Shirazu Orchestra, when he was 19 years old.Since then has performed at many famous music festivals in Japan and Europe. He has been freely moving between popular and underground music genres, and in recent years has been composing music for film and stage productions.

Pyeon In Ja is a Korean second-generation Zainichi Korean from Osaka, Japan, who has studied traditional dance since the age of 10. She is a Korean traditional dancer and percussionist (Chango). Founder of the Kansai Korean YMCA and the Korea in Japan (Tokyo) YMCA Dance and Chango School.

Ryu Sunja is a Korean traditional percussionist and dance performer. She is a third-generation zainichi Korean/Japanese grandmother. Representative of “tanbi,” a Korean traditional percussion performance troupe. She is the president of “Chango Class Chiu”. Instructor of dance at a folk school.

Kim Yung Joo is a third-generation zainichi Korean from Tokyo, Japan, and a saxophone player. In her twenties, she had the opportunity to meet musicians and was fascinated by them, and decided to pursue music. He has played in Korean percussion, folk, reggae, rock, jazz, and funk bands, as well as in his own group.

◉Kurdish residents of Japan

〜 Traditional Middle Eastern frame drum “daf” performance

Dengê Jinê leads a group of Kurdish women living in Japan who perform Kurdish traditional music accompanied by the daf, a traditional Middle Eastern frame drum. They live in Japan to escape discriminatory treatment in their homeland, and perform to introduce Kurdish culture in Japan and to pass it on to the next generation of their people.

Yumi Ito studied darbukkah under percussionists Masatoshi Kainuma and Kiyotaka Moriuchi, and daf from 2021 under Negar Ezazi. She has frequently traveled to Egypt to study with local musicians. She performs Arabic music in the Tokyo area and is active in a women's taiko drumming team.

Jun Kawasaki, Music and Poetic Drama Laboratory　

Jun Kawasaki, Music and Poetic Drama Laboratory, is a leading composer/director of music and poetic dramas. He creates music dramas in which multiple languages resonate with each other, tracing back to performing arts and folklore in Japan and abroad. In 2016, he launched the “Eurasian Opera Project” and has performed four works so far. In 2022, he attempted to create a “plaza” as a space of symbiosis between Korean traditional music “Jeongga” and singers of Taiwanese aboriginal origins as soloists, and Kurdish singers and percussion instruments from Kurdish communities in Japan who have passed down folk songs in their homeland. Kuroshio Project Taiwan - Yonaguni - Jeju” was performed in Okinawa and Tokyo in 2024, and received favorable reviews.

《国のない人々》とは、作曲家のクルト・ヴァイルが、ナチス党がドイツの政権を取った後に自分のことについて称した言葉です。いま、世界で戦争とナショナリズムが台頭し、国と人間のあらゆる境界線がゆらいでいます。NYに育ち、早くからアイデンティティの問題を音楽に意識的に取り入れてきたAyuoはじめ、日本に暮らす多様な出自、背景をもつ〈私たち〉の「アイデンティティとは何か？」「故郷とは何か?」。その音や声、うた、リズムの響きは、とおい過去から未来へむかい、想像と創造にいきる者たちの〈生〉の証です。

✷Ayuo（あゆお）　作曲家、作詞家、ヴォーカル、ギター、ブズーキの演奏者。作曲家・ピアニスト高橋悠治の長男として生まれる。ニューヨークで育ち、60 年代後半のアメリカの実験音楽、文学、 アートに影響を受ける。両親の家庭は数回離婚と結婚を繰り返し、育てた両親にはイラン系アメリカ人、アイルランド系アメリカ人、イギリス人等様々な文化と宗教的な考えが飛び交う中で育った。こうした環境がAyuoの文化的な背景を作った。ヨーロッパの中世音楽にも影響を受け、独自に調弦したギターで演奏し続けている。代表的な CD 作品：『Outside Society』、『ayuo.bandcamp.com』、『Eurasian Journey』ほか。　
✷立岩潤三 Junzo Tateiwa　ドラムを坂田稔に、ダルブカをSusu Pampanin（S.F./USA）、Serdar BAGTIR（Istanbul/Turkey）に、タブラ・バヤを吉見征樹、Prafulla Athalyeに師事。インド、アラブ、イラン古典音楽からロック、ジャズなど幅広く活動。日本のみに留まらず欧米各国、U.K、トルコ、台湾、香港、韓国等、ボ－ダレスな演奏活動を展開中。
★嶺川貴子 Takako Minekawa　6歳の時に映画『はなれ瞽女おりん』(篠田正浩監督)に岩下志麻の少女時代役で出演したことが、様々な始まり。多様な表現者とのコラボレーション/音楽制作を経ながら、近年は即興演奏のパフォーマンスを行なうなど活動は多方面にわたる。

◉東欧ユダヤの歌“イディッシュ・ソング”
〜祖国なき流浪の民の心の故郷〜
★こぐれみわぞう Miwazow Kogure　チンドン太鼓奏者、歌手、箏曲家。3歳から箏曲を始め、11歳で師範名取を襲名。1997年、ソウル・フラワー・モノノケ・サミットのチンドン太鼓奏者としてデビュー、シカラムータ、ジンタらムータで、華麗かつハイブリッドなロックチンドンのジャンルを切り拓く。歌手としては、イディッシュ歌謡、ブレヒトソング、多言語の様々な歌や、国内外の民謡を、《三文オペラ》では一人で男女五役を演じ分けて全曲歌い切る。
★上田恵理加 Erika Ueda　クルドの口頭伝承への関心から度々「クルディスタン」へ赴き、現地の生活の中で蒐集した民謡を歌っている。『世界の公用語事典』クルド語パート執筆協力。トルコ・イラクのメディアに多数出演。2023、24年、クルド人音楽家・研究者Serdar Cananを招聘、コンサートツアー、音楽劇、ワークショップを主催、共演。

◉在日コリアンの人々　
〜E.ギターと韓国伝統打楽器、Saxによるアンサンブル〜
✷ファンテイル FangTaeil　東京都出身の在日コリアン3世。19歳で渋さ知らズオーケストラに加入後、国内やヨーロッパを中心に名だたる音楽フェスでトリを務める。メジャーとアングラを自由に行き来し、近年は映画や舞台関係の作曲、音楽監督等の活動も行なっテイル。
★卞仁子 Pyeon In Ja 大阪出身、在日コリアンニ世。10歳より伝統舞踊を学ぶ。韓国伝統舞踊家・打楽器奏者（チャンゴ）。関西韓国YMCA・在日本韓国（東京）YMCA 舞踊・チャンゴ教室創設。
★柳絢子 Ryu Sunja　 韓国伝統打楽器&ダンスパフォーマー。在日コリアン三世/日本人の祖母を持つquarterでもある。韓国伝統打楽器演戯団「tanbi」代表。YMCAチャンゴ教室歴任。「チャンゴ教室Chiu」主宰。民族学校舞踊講師。
✷金永柱 Kim Yung Joo　　東京出身、在日コリアン三世。サックス奏者。20代の頃に音楽家と接する機会に恵まれ、魅了され音楽を志す。これまでに韓国打楽器・民謡、レゲエ、ロック、ジャズ、ファンクバンドや自身のグループで活動。

◉在日クルド民族の人々
〜中近東の伝統的なフレームドラム“ダフ”の演奏〜
Dengê Jinê Japan　中近東の伝統的なフレームドラムであるダフを用いてクルド音楽を演奏する在日クルド人女性グループ。故郷での差別的な処遇を逃れ日本に暮らす彼女らは、異郷の地でクルドの文化を紹介するため、また次世代の同胞へと継ぐため演奏活動を行っている。
★伊藤結美 Yumi Ito　ダルブッカをパーカッショニスト海沼正利、森内清敬、2021年よりダフをNegar Ezaziに師事。たびたびエジプトに渡り、現地ミュージシャンからも指導を受ける。東京近郊にてアラブ音楽の演奏や、女子太鼓チーム等で活動中。

✷河崎純・音楽詩劇研究所　Jun Kawasaki, Music and Poetic Drama Laboratory　
代表の河崎純作曲・演出による公演やWSなどを中心に活動。国内外の芸能やフォークロアを遡りつつ、多言語が響きあう音楽劇を創作。独自の合唱システムと即興表現を駆使し、国境を越えるコラボレーションから生まれた作品は、〈北東アジア版マジックリアリズム〉とも称される。2016年から「ユーラシアンオペラプロジェクト」を開始し、これまで四作品を上演。前作「A Night The Sky was Full of Crazy Stars」（2022）は、韓国伝統音楽「正歌」と台湾原住民の出自を持つ歌手をソリストに、異郷の地で民謡を伝承する在日クルド人の歌や打楽器を交えて、共生空間としての「広場」の創成を試みた。2024年沖縄と東京で『黒潮プロジェクト 台湾-与那国-済州』を上演、好評を博した。
