Tall and Mini Concert by Shih Ya Tien + suzueri
"Put 'em in a Box" is an urban research sound art project initiated in 2023 by curator Shih Ya Tien. https://soundboxes.net/en
Throughout the project, five sound artists based in different cities—Taipei, Tainan, Tokyo, Perth, and Helsinki—together with the curator, exchanged text scores and field recordings from their local environments to develop site-responsive artworks.
To date, the project has toured Sonic Sensory Lab, Taipei Music Center (Taipei, 2023), Cool Change Contemporary (Perth, 2024), and Waley Art (Taipei, 2024).
Now in its third year, the project archive has been compiled into an artist book, scheduled for publication this summer.
For the upcoming exhibition in collaboration with gift_lab, we will present small-scale works by the five participating artists alongside the launch of the artist book.
At the opening event on Saturday, July 5, curator Shih Ya Tien will give an overview of the project, followed by a mini live performance led by suzueri.

She holds an MFA degree in Curating from Goldsmiths, University of London and a BA degree in Chinese Literature from National Tsing Hua University. She works between institutions, studios, and artists, presenting projects in varied medium internationally. Her recent granted curatorial project includes Treasure Hill History and Culture Permanent Exhibition“Resonating Sound”(2021), Latin America X Taiwan Exchange Program “A Game between Borders”(2021), TheCube Project Space “Eavesdropping on the Wind and Cloud” Broadcast(2020).
