Andrea Centazzo is an Italian percussionist, now based in the United States. He is a genuine legend, with a recorded history alongside the musicians who broke open free jazz on both sides of the Atlantic — Derek Bailey (guitar), Steve Lacy (soprano saxophone), John Zorn (alto saxophone), Eugene Chadbourne (guitar), the ROVA Saxophone Quartet. His percussion set-up alone is extraordinarily inventive.
The pianist Mikiko Nagatake has cut a broad, full-blooded jazz path of her own, and her recent reach into free playing and improvisation — not least a solo album dedicated to Cecil Taylor — is remarkable in itself. In the plain, stripped-down form of a duo, what will the dialogue between her and the master Centazzo sound like? One to watch.
