The trio was formed in 2015 when they hit it off during a jam session. The name "Setagaya Trio" is derived from the fact that they met in Shimokitazawa, Setagaya-ku, Tokyo. The motif on the CD cover is the beckoning cat of Gotokuji temple in Setagaya. It is characterized by a style in which there is no specific musical leader and the three members play freely.

The trio's performance, which swallows everything from classic standard numbers to free jazz, acoustic, Latin, and Brazilian music, as well as contemporary R&B-flavored tunes, has been attracting attention in various parts of the country.

In 2017, they released their first album "introduce setagaya trio". Featured on NHK-FM Jazz Tonight.

Currently performing mainly at live music venues in Tokyo and in support of hip-hop producer STUTS, they are expanding the scope of their activities. In January 2024, the long-awaited second album "Progress" was released.
